Barbara Dorsey's Obituary
Barbara Dorsey,
age76, of Norton Shores, Michigan went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday evening, May 26, 2020. Barbara was born on October 28, 1943 in Zanesville, Ohio to Albert and Garnett {Woods} Stigler. Barbara graduated from Roseville High School in 1961. While there, she was active in band and chorus. She was an outstanding student and was inducted into the National Honor Society in 1962, Barbara married Rodrick Dorsey and moved to Zanesville Ohio and went to work for Rose Furniture Co. where she handled both sales and office duties. Later that year Barbara gave birth to her first son, Roderick Dorsey Jr. In 1963, Barbara moved to Dallas, Texas and went to work for Kadane and Sons. That same year Barbara gave birth to her second son, Theodore Dorsey. After a couple months, Barbara went to work for Collins Radio Co. as an Executive Assistant in the Export Division. In September of 1964, Barbara moved to Columbus, Ohio where she spent the next eight years raising her two sons, In 1972, Barbara and her family moved to Norton Shores, where she continued raising her family. In 1974, after bearing her third son, Jon Dorsey, Barbara felt the urge to go back to school. She enrolled at M.C.C. Where she got her nursing degree becoming an RN and winning the prestigious "Hadden Award" as the outstanding nursing student in her class. Barbara would go on to get her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Western Michigan University in 1993. Barbara started her nursing career in 1986 working for Dr. Raymond Cooper as an OB-GYN Nurse. She worked there for six years. Barbara then left private practice and hired on at Hackley Hospital where she eventually wound up working at Northwood and fell in love with Psychiatric Nursing. Barbara continued working for Hackley Hospital next at Westwood then at an off-site counseling campus in Grand Haven. Being told that she had a real gift for counseling, Barbara decided she needed to further her education so enrolled at Western Michigan University this time earning an M.A. with a major in Psychology, After a short internship and successfully earning her LLP license, Barbara spent the next eight years counseling people at "New Focus" a part of Gerber Hospital in Fremont Michigan. Barbara spent two of her favorite years, starting in 2016, as an Adjunct Professor teaching Psychology at Northpointe Bible College in Grand Rapids Michigan. Barbara, even though she liked her private time, was a fun-loving person always looking for new adventures. She loved traveling, shopping, theater, polka dancing, books, parties, games getting together with friends, working out, walking, but most important to her were her faith, her family, her friends and helping struggling people. Two of Barbara's very favorite things to do were leading "Shelter from the Storm" groups for sexually abused women and doing pro-bono counseling for hurting women. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Garnett Stigler, her sister, Ruth Ann Stigler, her brother Roger Stigler and her sister-in-law, Linda Stigler. Barbara is survived by her husband; Rodrick Dorsey; her three sons; Roderick Dorsey Jr., Theodore Dorsey and Jon Dorsey; her three daughters-in-law Iris Dorsey, Cindy Dorsey and Pam Dorsey; Grandchildren Thea Dorsey, Benjamin Dorsey, Joshua Dorsey, Noah Dorsey, Owen Dorsey and William Dorsey plus several nieces and nephews. Barbara was active in her Church teaching Sunday School and serving as Secretary of the Board of Deacons. She loved going on missions trips. Barbara also loved singing and was active in the Church Choir and Celebration Community Choir. Barbara loved people and will be greatly missed by her family and all the people whose lives she touched. Memorial donations may be given in her name to either Harbor Hospice or Central Assembly of God Missions Fund. Due to Covid-19 restrictions only a small service for the family will be held at this time. When restrictions are eased, a memorial service will follow.
