Carol Ann Verhoeven's Obituary
Carol Ann Verhoeven passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, at the age of 85, after a long courageous battle with Ulcerative Colitis. She was born on February 11, 1941, to John and Maxine DeYoung, in Muskegon, Michigan. She was the middle child of three, brother John DeYoung and Sharon DeYoung.
In 1958 she married Eugene Sheffer, and together they had 4 children, Randy, Rick, Robin, and Russell. Carol was employed for many years with the Muskegon Public Schools working with children. She worked at Marquette School, South Shores, and Wesley School. Through the years she formed many lifelong friendships. Later in life she married Don Verhoeven. Together they enjoyed going to performances at the Frauenthal Theater and attending Oakridge football games. Carol loved playing Words, baking, cooking, and making her famous soup and cauliflower salad. She was an amazing crafting artist. If she saw something she thought she could make, she made it. She would often set up a booth at a local craft show and sell her beautiful handcrafted items.
She enjoyed road trips up North, checking out the beautiful scenery and picking up some famous Smoked Hot Dogs. No trip was complete with stopping off to make a "donation" to the local Native American Society. Carol collected elephants and cardinals. She loved planting flowers in her backyard that invited a wide variety of birds to watch. When she was able, she attended her great-grandchildren's sporting events. She loved watching them play.
