Cynthia Arlene May's Obituary
Cynthia “Cindy” Arlene May of Muskegon passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the age of 80.
Cindy was an avid storyteller who never let the facts get in the way of a good story. She had a gift for embellishing details so convincingly that, by the end, no one quite knew where truth ended and fiction began—including Cindy herself. She loved sharing stories of the many adventures she and her husband, Bill, enjoyed together throughout the years.
Whether they were taking vacations across the country, spending time at their cabin in Ruby Creek, traveling in their RV to watch races, or escaping to Florida during the winter months, Bill and Cindy built a lifetime of memories together. When travel became more difficult due to Cindy’s health, they still found ways to get away—often visiting Little River Casino, their home away from home—where Cindy would always insist she had done alright and hadn’t lost too much money.
Cindy was known for being stubborn and having a tough exterior, but beneath that was a softer side that not everyone had the chance to see. She loved her family deeply—her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—even if she didn’t always express it openly. The photographs proudly displayed throughout her home spoke for her, and she was always eager to point out the newest additions to anyone who stopped by.
For someone who never quite mastered technology, Cindy truly embraced staying connected. She loved FaceTiming, talking on the phone, and making sure to comment on nearly every photo posted on Facebook. And while Cindy’s language could occasionally make even a sailor blush, she did her best to censor herself around little ears—it was the effort that counted.
Cindy was deeply heartbroken when her other half, Bill, passed away just six weeks before her. While their loss leaves an immeasurable void, her family finds comfort in imagining them together again—off on new adventures, free from pain and health complications, side by side once more.
Cindy was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, William “Bill” May Sr.; her parents, William and Gertrude Hunter; her sister, Elizabeth Johnston; and her grandson, Robbie Katzenbach.
She is survived by her children, Mike (Teresa) McKenna, Michelle (Matt) Sprague, Lisa (Leroy) Bayne, Billy (Kim) May, Bob (Elaine) May, Becky Katzenbach, and Bruce (Tammy) May; along with 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Cindy will be remembered for the way her stories always seemed to grow a little with each telling, her unique sense of humor, and determination. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 2:00–5:00 p.m. at The American Legion, 803 E. Colby Street, Whitehall, Michigan. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor Cindy’s life.
