Donald L. Verhoeven's Obituary
Donald LaVerne Verhoeven, age 83, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023. He was born in Muskegon on July 15, 1940, to Gerritt and Evangeline Verhoeven. Don is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Julie Clements of Muskegon, Donald M. (Rita) Verhoeven of Delton, MI and Mark (Tammy) Verhoeven of Twin Lake; 3 stepchildren, Randy (Angie) Sheffer, Robin (Rodney) Stenberg, and Russell (Becky) Sheffer; 15 grandchildren, Michael (Ashleigh), Charles (Courtney), Kristina, Kara, Christopher, Branden, Ricky, Justin, Kayleigh, Christopher (Melissa), Jessica (Matt), Joshua, Jared (Carey), Desera (Sean), and Derrick (Dorothy); 37 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Rick W. Sheffer and by 2 brothers and a sister.
Don returned to school when he was in his 50's and earned two Master's Degrees. He also became certified with ICADA, SPADA, CAAC, and MCBAP. He worked for Newaygo Community Mental Health until he became legally blind in 2014.
Don attended the Salvation Army for many years prior to Fellowship Church and was a prayer warrior that read the Bible extensively. He was a musician who played many instruments and enjoyed High School football and dressing up as Santa.
Don donated his body to MSU for teaching purposes. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Harbor Hospice Poppen Residence.
