Duane W. Drier's Obituary
Duane "Stub" William Drier, age 77, of Jamestown, Michigan, passed away on July 24, 2025, at the Poppen House Residence in Muskegon, Michigan.
Born on October 23, 1947, in Cheboygan, Michigan, Duane was the youngest of seven children of Myron "Mike" and Frances Drier. He grew up on the family farm in Pellston and later in Muskegon, where he became a proud member of the first graduating class of Mona Shores High School in 1965.
Duane began his career as a heavy equipment operator and later found his niche as a pinsetter mechanic - a perfect fit for someone who enjoyed bowling as much as he did. Known for his mechanical expertise and hands-on knowledge, he mentored many and became a trusted consultant for bowling alleys throughout West Michigan.
He had a lifelong passion for building and fixing things - from some of the earliest home computers to dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and cars. Whether he was in the garage with a set of tools or at his desk assembling a custom PC, he found joy in making things work - and making them better.
Duane was also an enthusiastic sports fan who looked forward to cheering on his favorite teams, especially the Detroit Red Wings. He rarely missed a game and loved talking hockey with anyone who would listen.
A talented woodworker, Duane poured his heart into every bowl, cutting board, and piece of furniture he crafted. In healthier years, he was also an avid hunter and fisherman, with the stories to prove it. Whether at the farm, on the water, at his cabin, or in the woods, he thoroughly enjoyed his time outdoors. Some of his happiest days were spent riding dirt bikes at his cabin in Baldwin, surrounded by the woods and the people he loved - always making sure to treat them to a trip to Jones' Ice Cream.
He is survived by his children: Ashley (Joel) Schnotala of Norton Shores, Michigan; Mandy (Brian) Lund of Florence, South Carolina; Sarah Edwards of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Scott (Andrea) Drier of Norton Shores, Michigan. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Zachary and Jacob Schnotala; Ryan, Lillian, and Noah Lund; Ryan and Luke Edwards; and Julia and Christopher Drier. His surviving siblings include Helen Beach of Zellwood, Florida; and Ronald (Jeanne) Drier, of Sparta, Michigan. He is also lovingly remembered by his special companion, Jan, who remained by his side throughout his long cancer journey.
Duane was preceded in death by his wife Cindy; his parents; and his siblings: Myron "Mike" (Jean) Drier of Muskegon, Michigan; Melvin "Bill" (Arlene) Drier of Pensacola, Florida; Richard "Dale" (Martha) Drier of Holland, Michigan; and Shirley Andrews of Muskegon, Michigan.
Duane will live on in the memories of his large and cherished family, dear friends, and devoted neighbors who will fondly remember his generous spirit, his willingness to fix anything, his quick smile, and the sense of humor that stayed with him until the very end.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 2355 W. Sherman Blvd, Muskegon, MI 49441.
