Eugene "Chips" Ely Jr.'s Obituary
Chips went to be with the Lord on April 27, 2024, at the Leila and Cyrus Poppen House Residence in Fruitport, Michigan. Chips was born on August 6, 1943, in Columbus Ohio to Eugene Ivan EIy and Marjorie (Dye) Ely. Chips grew up in Northville, Michigan and attended Ferris State University, where he ran track and performed in the orchestra. Chips was a co-owner of Ely Fuel in Northville, a fuel-oil distributor for home heating, as well as a True Value Hardware store franchisee. He also owned and operated several other businesses during his lifetime. Chips was a life-long entrepreneur and he also authored three novels.
Chips was a friend to all and never met a stranger. He was proud to have achieved over 40 years of sobriety and was a true supporter of Alcoholics Anonymous. He received a certificate from the University of Utah School of Alcoholism and other Drug Dependencies Education, Prevention and Youth Counseling, helping to support Native American missions across the southwest United States.
Chips was predeceased in death by his parents, Ivan and Marjorie, and his sister, Jackie Towne. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Karen (Mark) Hebard of Dallas, TX, Scott (Wendy) Ely of Spring Lake, MI, and Timothy (Anjoo) Ely of Novi, MI. He is also survived by his daughter from a previous marriage, Kathryn Ely. Chips is also survived by his sisters Susan (Mike) Cherveny of Indian River, MI and Sara (Hap Schadler) Sugrue of Littleton, CO. Chips is also fondly remembered by seven loving grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
