Jeffery David Downing's Obituary
Jeffery David Downing, age 64, passed away Friday, May 1, 2026.
Jeff was born on October 3, 1961, in Marysville, KS to Robert and Patricia (Pittenger) Downing and spent the majority of his life in Saginaw, MI. He graduated from Saginaw Arthur Hill in 1979 where he participated in track and cross country and was a member of the Thespians, where he built and prepared the critical set designs. After high school, Jeff aka ‘Bodine’ played in various fast pitch leagues where he was an outstanding outfielder. Jeff’s teams also participated in several National Championship games.
Jeff worked at various jobs after high school before starting his career with Petrie Construction. Jeff became a journeyman carpenter specializing in acoustical work. Jeff also spent many years working with Acoustical Arts where he continued to perfect his skills. Jeff is a proud member of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters, Local 1045. He retired from working at the age of 58.
In his free time, Jeff enjoyed talking walks through the neighborhood or along wooded trails. He took pride in his home and yard and kept his lawn and flower beds neatly tended. He was an avid sports fan and faithfully followed the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Redwings and the teams from the University of Michigan. Jeff dearly loved his 4-legged companions and showered them with attention. He happily spent time tossing the ball for his ‘grand dog’ Bjorn and giving massages to his ‘nephew’ Max.
Jeff is survived by two sons, Tyler (Maija Poyhonen) and Nicolas, both of Saginaw, MI. He is also survived by his sister Linda (Pat) Shaffer of Clarkston, MI; brothers Mark (Julie) of Twin Lake, MI, Doug of Seven Fields, PA, Dennis (Helen) of Saugatuck, MI, and Roger Downing of Saginaw, MI; and many nieces and nephews who loved their uncle dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Jon Shaffer.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday June 10th, 2026, from 11 am until 2 pm at Swan Valley Golf and Banquet, 9521 Highland Green Drive, Saginaw, MI 48609. A service will be held at 11:30 am. The family would love to hear your memories and stories with Jeff, please come ready to share. A luncheon will be served after the service.
