He graduated from Western Michigan University with a teaching degree in 1991 and embarked up a career in education for 23 years.
Sonny led an active life. As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball at McRea Field with other local guys during the summer for better than a decade and had fond memories of those days. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends, and especially enjoyed going on camping excursions with his family. Sonny was also passionate about playing music, and as a guitarist, he played in several local rock bands over the years and cherished the relationships he had developed with other local musicians.
