Lawrence R. Boone, Sr.'s Obituary
Larry Boone Sr, a lifelong resident of the Muskegon and Fruitport area, passed away on Monday morning, September 17
th
. He had been suffering from heart failure and complications from a recent illness.
Born on August 14, 1927 in Winchendon, MA, Larry's family moved to the Muskegon area when he was two years old. He attended Muskegon Heights Public Schools and graduated in 1946. After serving a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, Larry enrolled in college, receiving a bachelor's degree in education at Central Michigan University and a master's degree from Michigan State University.
Larry had a distinguished career as an educator, administrator, and coach. He was the first athletic director of Oakridge Public Schools. In 1967, he took the job as principal of the Nunica Bldg., part of the Spring Lake Public Schools and served in that district for 19 years. Larry retired in 1986 and enjoyed a long and active retirement. He married Melda Anderson in 1951 and raised six children. He is preceded in death by Melda, his brother, Daniel and a son Tommy David.
Survivors include his sister, Lillie Solokis of Muskegon; sister-in-law, Marylin Ross of Muskegon; four sons, Lawrence Jr. (Joann) of Cloverville, Michael J. of Fruitport, David P. (Tammy) of FL and Mark C. of Fruitport; daughter, Kimberly S. Lagae of Florida; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Larry will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and countless former students, whose lives he had touched over the years.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Bethel Baptist Church of Fruitport, 213 Oak St., Fruitport, MI 49415. Pastor Lee Coggin will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the church just prior to the service. A luncheon will follow. Floral arrangements may be sent directly to the church.
