Marcia A. Aslakson's Obituary
Marcia Aslakson, aged 77, passed away surrounded by loved ones at her home in Muskegon on Monday, July 2, 2018.
Marcia was born in East Grand Rapids to William and Ruth (Ferguson) Seelman on January 26, 1941. She graduated from Comstock Park High School and went on to earn her Bachelors and Master's degrees in Social Work from Western Michigan University.
After beginning her work life as a telephone operator and a Keebler Elf Marcia went on to spend her life as a Social Justice Warrior working for the betterment of Muskegon and all who live here. Throughout the years Marcia worked for Child and Family Services of Michigan as well as the Muskegon Red Cross. She was one of the first directors of the Muskegon Planned Parenthood and a tireless supporter of women's reproductive rights, also having designed the first reproductive health program for Muskegon Public Schools in the 1980s. Marcia served the people of Muskegon as the President of the Nelson Neighborhood Improvement Association and the Director of Muskegon Area Fair Housing. During this time Marcia was instrumental in bringing the building of Nelson Place, an independent living senior community, to fruition of which she was very proud.
Marcia also served the community during her leisure hours. She was a member of the Civil Service Commission for several years. She also worked tirelessly every Christmas for years on the Adopt-a-Family program at Samuel Lutheran Church ensuring that all children in and around the Nelson neighborhood would have special gifts to open Christmas morning. In addition to these things Marcia was always willing to lend a hand. She helped many people to overcome hardships, addictions, and bad luck reaching out to strangers and friends alike.
Marcia had a beautiful soprano voice and loved to sing. She performed at different times with the Sweet Adelines and the White Lake Chorale. She enjoyed gardening and would spend hours caring for her flowers as well as the raspberries that she always let her grandkids pick and eat. Marcia was an avid collector of teapots, dolls, and blue glass filling her home with a variety of beautiful objects. She was a member of a dedicated group of women whom she loved to go away with for their women's weekends every year for over 30 years.
A good friend once told Marcia that he knew a great guy that she should meet. She agreed and the two had a disastrous first date. However, Marcia gave it another chance and soon she and John Aslakson fell in love. They were married May 6, 1978 and spent many years as Fifth Street Irregulars throwing legendary block parties in the summer and Super Bowl parties every winter.
Marcia is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Ruth Seelman, as well as her daughter, Chandra Page, and husband, John Aslakson, and their little dog Inga Lou. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Jamie Arnold Page, along with their children, Madison and Logan Page. Marcia is also survived by her special cousin, Rochelle Cronk, and good friends, Marty Allen, Barb Stuart, and Pam Hassett, as well as her sisters- and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
The family will be welcoming friends and family for visitation from 5:00-8:00 pm with a time of memory sharing at 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Hagar's Hideaway, 3156 Lakeshore Drive, Muskegon, MI 49441.
