Nellie Irene (Stevens) Luhman's Obituary
Luhman, Mrs. Nellie Irene (Stevens) R.N.
Muskegon
Nellie Irene (Stevens) Luhman, age 95, passed away peacefully at home on October 27, 2021. Nell was born in Muskegon to Clara (Knoll) and Joseph Stevens and grew up on Apple Avenue with her brothers and sister in a neighborhood filled with aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. After graduating from Muskegon High School in 1944, she attended the Hackley School of Nursing and did post-graduate RN studies in Chicago and Detroit. Her 40-year nursing career was spent at Hackley Hospital in the labor and delivery department assisting generations of women and babies. In 1955, while volunteering for the American Red Cross, she met William Luhman and they shared 45 years of marriage before his death in 2001. Together they raised three daughters. Muskegon First Reformed and Westwood Reformed were Nell's church homes where she was active in the Women's Guild, Ladies Bible class, quilting group, and M.A.P. Supper House. Nell maintained lifelong friendships she formed during school, in her career and church, and often traveled with friends during her retirement. Late in life, she had the challenge of dementia and it was the loving support of her daughters that allowed her to remain in the home she and Bill built together.
She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, brothers, Bert, James and Harris and her sister, Joyce. Nell is survived by her daughters Marsha (Ronald) Marek, Lyn Luhman, and Suzanne Luhman-Plough (Scott Plough) and her four grandchildren, the joys of her life; Allison Marek (husband Rick Salazar), William, Lucas, and Alexander Plough. In addition, she leaves behind sisters-in-law Lois (Bert) Culver-Stevens and Marian (James) Stevens, two special nieces, Kerry Stevens and Caron Tierman, and a host of extended family members.
In keeping with Nell's wishes, a private service will be held after which interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery. For a lasting memorial, please consider a donation in Nell's name to the Muskegon Community College RN Program via the Muskegon Community Foundation and the Foundation for the MCC Muskegon District Nurse Scholarship.
