Dear Carol, Deann, and Suellen,
So sorry to hear about Don's passing. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and support for your loss.
Don was an old dear friend of mine that I hadn't seen for about 44 years, but the very instant I heard of his passing I flashed back to the spring of 1979 just like it was yesterday. It takes a long time to grow an old friend, and Don was the very best! I consider it a privilege and an honor to have known him for so long. Don and I corresponded a few times via snail mail since I left Muskegon in the summer of 1980.
I recall his creativity - - - his welcoming attitude - - - his happy demeanor - - - his importance of family and friends, and most of all, his zest for life. Some of my best times were spent in his basement working out in the evenings. Yes, the work-outs were great for the body, but the camaraderie and conversations about life were priceless for the soul. Thanks to Don, I still prioritize working-out and living a healthy lifestyle. He was such a positive influence on me, and I will be forever grateful that our paths crossed.
I have many fond memories of my two years living in Muskegon, and they mostly revolved around Don, his family and friends: The weekend round-robin ping pong matches in his basement; the silky-smooth BMW motorcycle rides on Sunday afternoons; helping him re-roof his garage, and many more. He showed patience and kindness in every action and was an exceptional teacher of life skills. It's impossible for me to forget someone who gave me so much to remember!
This past year I also lost not just one, but both my parents within five months. It was certainly unanticipated, but I am grateful for the past memories I have of them. I now realize how short and unpredictable life is and how we should take every opportunity to celebrate it. All of it. Even the end.
Sending all my best wishes,
Jeff Hewitt, P.O. Box 303, Glenmont, OH 44628
