I served my year of pastoral internship under Homer's guidance and teaching in '61-'62. I arrived in Metz with my wife, Sonja, and 6-wk old daughter, Janet. We lived upstairs in the parsonage, which had been made into an apartment. We had many family times together which are a part of our memory bank.
With three congregations at Metz, Leer, and Hagensville, I had a lot of exposure to preaching, ministry, and visitation. Under Homer's teaching and guidance I had an excellent idea what was in store for me when I finished seminary and had my first call, which was four rural congregations in ND. It was a good year of exposure to the realities of life in the lives of people, and how to reach out with the gospel in the tough issues of life.
We have good memories of our year in Michigan, and remember with fondness our time with Homer's family, and the people whom we served (and they served us too)! As a side note, Janet has been an ELCA pastor for 28 years in western North Dakota.
Our sincere condolences to Hilda, Ellen, Kathy, Philip, Ralph and their families.
